Bias on the Bench/Sentencing
Dec. 12, 2016—Sarasota Herald-Tribune By Josh Salman, Emily Le Coz and Elizabeth Johnson
(Editor’s Note: This story is taken from a 2016 one-year investigation made by the Saratoga Herald-Tribune after reviewing tens of millions of records in two state databases and published in 2016.
Justice has never been blind when it comes to race in Florida. Half a century after the civil rights movement, trial judges throughout Florida sentence blacks to harsher punishment than whites, a Herald-Tribune investigation found. They offer blacks fewer chances to avoid jail or scrub away felonies They give blacks more time behind bars—sometime double the sentences of whites accused of the same crimes under identical circumstances. Florida lawmakers have struggled for 30 years to create a more equitable system.

New Florida College Survey Asks Students: Does a Vote for Donald Trump or Joe Biden End A Friendship?
The latest round of a controversial state surveys of Florida college and university students includes a slew of new questions probing how their political views have affected relationships on campus — and whether it’s hard to be friends with people who have voted for Joe Biden or Donald Trump. The anonymous and voluntary annual survey — which is loaded with ideological political and free speech questions — was distributed by email and text to public higher ed students and was to be completed by Friday. Some students said they viewed participation in the survey as a responsibility. Others, along with faculty members, expressed skepticism about the survey’s content, methodology and security. Florida temporarily suspended the “intellectual freedom and viewpoint diversity” survey last year after distributing it for the first time in 2022, with a response rate of roughly 2% for students. The annual surveys are mandated by a law signed by Gov. Ron DeSantis in 2021 following Republican state lawmakers’ concerns about conservative views being suppressed on college campuses.

Here’s How Sarah Huckabee Sanders Is Welcoming Education Secretary Miguel Cardona to Arkansas
Education Secretary Miguel Cardona is hitting the road this week…The trip, according to the Biden administration, is to highlight its “commitment to fixing the broken student loan system”—by saddling millions of American taxpayers with more than $140 billion worth of student debt they did not incur… Well, Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders isn’t letting his and Biden’s agenda come through Arkansas unchallenged. “We welcome you to our state, but we fear that his visit will only serve to highlight some of your administration’s worst mistakes,” Sanders wrote in a letter co-signed by state Education Secretary Jacob Oliva to Cardona this week. “The Biden administration’s forgiveness of certain student loans is unfair, unwise, and unlawful. Not only does it force Arkansans who chose not to attend college to pay for others’ education, not only does it offer forgiveness for past loans with no plan to address the future growth of college tuition expenses, but it has also been declared unconstitutional by the U.S. Supreme Court.” https://townhall.com/tipsheet/spencerbrown/2024/04/23/heres-how-sarah-huckabee-sanders-welcomed-education-secretary-cardona-to-arkansas-n2638161

Report Says Banks Help Feds Spy On Trump Supporters
A report in the Daily Mail says that Republicans in Congress are investigating more than 10 banks (Bank of America, Chase, U.S. Bank, Wells Fargo, Citi Bank, Truist) and 7 other financial institutions (Charles Schwab, HSBC, MUFG, PayPal, Santander, Standard Chartered and Western Union) “for colluding with the federal government to spy on Americans after the January 6 protests.” Federal investigators asked banks to search and filter customer transactions by using terms like “MAGA” and “Trump” as part of an investigation into Jan. 6, warning that purchases of “religious texts” could indicate “extremism,” the House Judiciary Committee revealed Wednesday.

George Soros is paying student radicals who are fueling nationwide explosion of Israel-hating protests
George Soros and his hard-left acolytes are paying agitators who are fueling the explosion of radical anti-Israel protests at colleges across the country. The protests, which began when students took over Columbia University’s Morningside Heights campus lawn last week, have mushroomed nationwide. Copycat tent cities have been set up at colleges including Harvard, Yale, Berkeley in California, the Ohio State University and Emory in Georgia — all of them organized by branches of the Soros-funded Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) — and at some, students have clashed with police.

Over 4,000 Female Athletes Demand NCAA Protect Women’s Sports
Over 4,000 female athletes have called upon the NCAA Board of Governors to protect women’s sports by barring male athletes from competing. The advocacy group Our Bodies, Our Sports reportedly delivered a “coalition letter signed by its 12 member organizations from across the political aisle demanding the NCAA take immediate action to repeal its discriminatory policy that allows male athletes to compete in women’s sports — taking trophies, roster sports, playing time, resources, and opportunities to compete from women,” according to the Independent Women’s Forum. The coalition of letters were delivered before the NCAA Board of Governors could meet on Thursday, April 25, where the organization will consider its policy on males participating in women’s sports. The meeting follows a lawsuit filed by activist Riley Gaines (Gaines et al. v NCAA et al.). The current policy allows males to compete in women’s sports, provided their testosterone levels have been lowered to a specific requirement.
