Florida Among Top 10 U.S. States With Highest Drowning Deaths

A new study reveals that Florida has the third-highest rate of drowning deaths in the United States.

The research by Las Vegas injury law firm, Ladah Injury & Car Accident Lawyers, analyzed the data for drowning deaths from 2019 to 2023 for each U.S. state via the CDC’s Underlying Cause of Death database. Average death rates per 100,000 residents were calculated to identify the states where Americans are most at risk of drowning.

Florida ranks third with 2.34 deaths per 100,000 residents, which is about 53% higher than the national average of 1.53. Between 2019 and 2023, Florida, with a population of approximately 21.9 million, saw an average of 514 drowning deaths a year. In 2021, 543 deaths were recorded, while in 2019, 456 were recorded.

Looking at the study, a spokesperson at Ladah Injury & Car Accident Lawyers commented:

“The study highlights that Florida reported the third-highest drowning death rates in the U.S.

“These high rates of drowning deaths put both residents and visitors at significant risk. Such tragic incidents not only result in devastating loss of life but also create lasting trauma for families and communities. Water-related activities are meant to be enjoyable and recreational, but the reality is that drowning remains a leading cause of accidental death, particularly in states with extensive coastlines, lakes, and water recreation opportunities.

“To reduce these incidents, state leaders and policymakers can implement enhanced water safety education programs, improved lifeguard coverage, and better enforcement of water safety regulations.”

Table for Extended Results:

The study was conducted by Ladah Injury & Car Accident Lawyers, an experienced personal injury law firm dedicated to protecting clients’ rights and maximizing claim value.
