Local 3101 Sponsors Adoption Event

The Board of County Commissioners and Nassau County Animal Services would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the International Association of Firefighters – Local 3101 (Nassau County Fire Rescue) for sponsoring this weekend’s adoption event at Petco in Yulee. Thanks to their generosity, adoption fees of up to $500 were covered, pet beds and supplies were purchased, and even more importantly, their members came out in person to walk dogs, interact with potential adopters, and spread the word about giving shelter pets a second chance.

Because of their efforts, 10 animals found loving new homes! Partnerships like these make an incredible difference for our community, showing how much can be accomplished when local organizations come together for a shared cause. Local 3101 went above and beyond, not only providing financial support, but also dedicating their time and energy to help our shelter pets. We are truly grateful for their commitment to both public service and animal welfare.

First Budget Hearing for FY 25/26

On Monday, July 28, 2025, the Board of County Commissioners held a workshop to review the tentative budget and maximum millage rate for Fiscal Year 2025/2026. Based on the budget presented, the BOCC is proposing a structurally balanced budget which includes the fifth consecutive year of millage rate [property tax rate] reductions, while continuing to fund the critical Capital Improvement Plan, Pavement Management Plan, Chip Seal Program, and improving public safety through investments into the Nassau County Sheriff’s Office and the Nassau County Fire Department.

The BOCC’s first public hearing to consider adoption of the FY 25/26 budget is scheduled for Monday, September 8, 2025 at 5:00 p.m. in the Commission Chambers located at 96135 Nassau Place, Yulee, FL. The public is welcome to attend and address the Board. During the hearing, the BOCC will schedule the second/final budget hearing, as required by Florida Statute.

Turtle Talk Tuesday

For this week’s Turtle Talk Tuesday, we shared information on boat strikes and the significant threats to sea turtles and other marine animals. The Inwater Research Group recently shared this photo after encountering two loggerhead sea turtles that had been struck by boats.

According to the Sea Turtle Conservancy, sea turtles have poor hearing and vision when out of the water, making them vulnerable to vessel strikes when rising to the surface to breathe, bask in the sun, or feed in shallow areas. Many sea turtles are injured or killed by blunt-force trauma caused by boat impacts or propellers.

For tips on reducing risks, please click here.

By working together and practicing safe boating habits, we can greatly reduce the number of preventable injuries to these incredible creatures. Every small action—whether it’s slowing down, staying alert, or reporting an accident—helps protect sea turtles and ensures that future generations will continue to enjoy their presence in our waters. Thank you for doing your part to keep our oceans safe.

Transparency

The Nassau County Strategic Plan, adopted on May 18, 2022, identifies that the #1 Big Picture Goal of the Board of County Commissioners is to “Create a more effective, efficient, and transparent government.” As the #1 priority of the Nassau County BOCC, creating more transparent government guides policy-making, planning and decision- making.

Prior to the creation of the Florida Office of the Governor Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), the BOCC had already prioritized fiscal integrity, transparency, and is focused on creating a more efficient and effective local government over the past five years.
