Recycle Right Nassau – Best Recycling Practices

Recycling is one of the simplest and most impactful ways to care for our community and environment—but only when done right. In Nassau County, proper recycling ensures materials are actually processed and kept out of landfills, rather than ending up as contamination. The Nassau County Solid Waste Department is making recycling easier with enhancements at County recycling sites and a new downloadable Recycling Guide

Introducing the NCAS Boutique Adoption Program

At Nassau County Animal Services (NCAS), we’re rolling out the red carpet for our most unforgettable pups and kitties. The Boutique Adoption Program is curated for pets with big personalities, endearing quirks, and one-of-a-kind charm.

These are not your average adoptable pets. They’re the kind of companions that turn heads — full of personality, heart, and a little extra spark. Whether they’ve been overlooked, need a bit more TLC, or simply march to their own beat, each one is a truly unforgettable and original.

Adopting from the Boutique Adoption Program is like walking into a party knowing that no one else shares your style. It’s one-of-a-kind companionship — instant icon status.

Countess Tater Von Scruffles AKA Barbie. Barbie is regal in ruffles and rich in attitude. Barbie has only child syndrome and would prefer to be in a home without children and without other pets.to be in a home without children and without other pets.Sir Basil Dreadwhistle AKA Guinness. Small in stature, grand in tragic monologue! Guinness only likes female dogs and he’s young, single and ready to mingle.
Count Waggula Von Howlington AKA Ramp. Ramp sleeps in sunbeams by day, haunts chew toys by night. Senior living is the life for Ramp and he prefers a slower lifestyle and to be the only pet in the house.Empress Cuddletoes of Fluffvania AKA Scarf. Scarf rules with a velvet paw and a royal stare. Not everyone makes the cut for Scarf’s royal court as she is slow to get used to other animals and does not like the company of small children.

Proposed Revisions to Beach Ordinance to be Considered on August 11th

In October 2020, Nassau County adopted a new Beach Ordinance to protect citizens, the environment, and wildlife on beaches in the unincorporated area of Amelia Island (from Peters Point south to the State Park) and to consolidate regulations related to beach activities into one comprehensive document. Since its adoption, staff has continually worked to review beach driving regulations.

Recently, the Board of County Commissioners engaged Coastal Conservation Group, LLC, a northeast Florida firm with expertise in biology, sea turtle research, conservation, sustainability and endangered species monitoring, to conduct an environmental assessment of Nassau County beaches. This included a review of the current Ordinance and related County procedures, as well as meetings with County staff and the beach security team, Giddens.

Based on this assessment, County management staff are recommending amendments clarifying legal intent, motor vehicle access hours, enforcement, defining beachfront park areas, and providing for a Protected Species Management Plan, pursuant to Florida Statute Chapter 89-445 (Senate Bill 1577). A public hearing has been scheduled for Monday, August 11, 2025 at 5 pm.

Students Return to School on August 11th

Nassau County students return to school on Monday, August 11, 2025.

To help everyone get off to a strong start, here are a few friendly tips for a smooth and successful school year:

  1. Ease into routines early. Get back into good sleep and morning habits this weekend so Monday doesn’t feel overwhelming.
  2. Stay plugged in. Download and explore the district’s communications app to stay up to date on news, events, announcements, and resources. nassau.k12.fl.us
  3. Organize your space. Gather necessary supplies, set up your study area, and pack your bag the night before to reduce stress on that first morning.
  4. Build connections early. Whether it’s at orientation, meet‑and‑greets, or simply in the hallways, take time to introduce yourself and make new friends. These connections can make a big difference!
  5. Stay curious and engaged. Ask questions, participate in discussions, and stay open to new ideas—learning thrives on curiosity.
  6. Practice balance and self-care. Be sure to take breaks, stay active, and ask for help when needed—for yourself or your child.
  7. Set realistic goals. Focus on positive habits such as staying organized, being kind, and showing effort—and celebrate small wins throughout the year.

Wishing everyone a fantastic first week and a fulfilling year ahead.

Turtle Talk Tuesday

Did you know that the temperature of a sea turtle’s developing eggs determines whether or not the offspring will be male or female? In most species, gender is determined during the fertilization process, however the sex of most turtles, alligators and crocodiles is determined after fertilization. This is called temperature-dependent sex determination.
Research shows that if it turtles eggs incubate below 81.86°F, the hatchling will be male. If the eggs incubate above 88.8°F, the offspring will be female. Temperatures that fall somewhere between will produce a mix of male and female, baby turtles.

Transparency

The Nassau County Strategic Plan, adopted on 5/18/22, identifies that the #1 Big Picture Goal of the Board of County Commissioners is to “Create a more effective, efficient, and transparent government.” As the #1 priority of the Nassau County BOCC, creating more transparent government guides policy-making, planning and decision- making.
Prior to the creation of the Florida Office of the Governor Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), the BOCC had already prioritized fiscal integrity, transparency, and is focused on creating a more efficient and effective local government over the past five years.
