About Kathy Burns – Kathy Burns is an energetic leader who is dedicated to the success of students and the improvement of our schools.  Her open door, hands-on approach to leadership may see her serving in the cafeteria, lending a hand as a para on a bus, meeting with students and parents, running a shelter during hurricane season, or holding advisory group meetings.   As Superintendent of Schools, Kathy Burns has led the Nassau County School District to seven years of A ratings.  Nassau County School District has also been recognized as a High Academically Performing District. The district’s most recent audit stated “no deficiencies in the operation of the Nassau County School District.”   Kathy has partnered with local agencies like the Boys and Girls Club to expand after school opportunities for students. She has dedicated her work to the five focus areas of the Nassau County School District’s Strategic Plan while building relationships with students, families, and community partners.  Under her leadership, safety has been Priority #1.

About Curtis Gaus

Curtis Gaus, a US Navy veteran, has been in education for 25 years in Duval, Nassau, and Levy counties.  While the bulk of his career has been in Nassau County, he values the experience he has gained from his time in both Duval and Levy.  Curtis has served as both middle and high school teacher (Biology and Chemistry), Assistant Principal (Fernandina Beach High School), Principal (West Nassau High School and Bronson Middle/High School), and Adult and Career Education Director (Nassau).

As Superintendent of Schools, Curtis pledges to prioritize:

  • Budget/Financial Transparency and Accountability to the Taxpayers
  • Increased Student – Success and Safety
  • Improved Communication, Collaboration and Partnerships
  • Professional Development and Training

Curtis believes his experience, vision, and leadership skills make him the best candidate to address the current challenges facing the school district and provide a vision to prepare our students to compete in an ever-changing world.  He has witnessed firsthand the transformative power of education in shaping the lives of our students, and he has been deeply committed to fostering an environment where every student can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.

Curtis earned his bachelor’s degree from Northwest Missouri State University, his Master’s in Educational Leadership from UNF, and his Educational Specialist in Curriculum and Instruction from UWF.  Curtis and his wife, Jennifer, have five adult children, who all graduated from West Nassau High School, and have successful careers and young families of their own.  Curtis and Jennifer are members of the Anchor Church of God in Callahan.
