Florida Tops Lightning Risk with 3.01 Deaths Per Million and 15 Dead

A new study reveals that Florida has the second-highest lightning death rate in the U.S.

The research, conducted by personal injury law firm Simmrin Law Group, analyzed lightning fatality data from the National Lightning Safety Council across all 50 U.S. states between 2015 and 2024. The total number of lightning deaths per million residents was calculated to determine which states are most affected by lightning fatalities.

Florida holds the second spot nationally for lightning fatalities, following 2.31 deaths per million residents between 2015 and 2024, more than four times the national average of 0.56. The Sunshine State experienced a total of 50 deaths due to lightning, from an average population of 21,610,837.7.

A spokesperson from Simmrin Law Group commented:

“The high number of lightning-related deaths in Florida underscores a pressing local safety concern that calls for immediate and sustained action. Each of these fatalities represents not just a statistic, but a devastating loss for families and communities alike.

“To help prevent such tragedies, it’s crucial to invest in public education campaigns that raise awareness about lightning safety, along with robust alert systems that give residents time to react during severe weather.

“Local officials should prioritize both outreach and infrastructure improvements that can safeguard lives when thunderstorms strike.”
