After years of preparation, the Western Allies, on June 6, 1944, 81 years ago, began the largest amphibious invasion in history. It firmly established the European WWll Western front in France, a massive multi-national effort leading to the defeat of Nazi Germany, in cooperation with the Soviets, moving in from the east. It ended up with the US becoming the most powerful nation in the world.

The campaign was a masterstroke of complex alliances, planning, force application and logistics likely unparalleled in history, although there have been bigger invading armies.

As horrible as the casualties were, it was pretty good for such a high risk operation. Although American forces did the brunt of fighting on the Western Front, The Soviets had a larger scale and more difficult time ousting the Nazis. Their hatred and fear of them persists to this day.

The end of this hot war marked the beginning of the Cold War of NATO nations vs the Warsaw pact- the Soviet Union and its satellite nations. It lasted until the 1991 collapse of the Soviet Union, followed by its satellite states.

This was also a time of great national unity and common purpose in defeating a major threat to freedom in the world and even potentially the USA.
