Happy Halloween and Fall Greetings from St. Marys Riverkeeper!

River Protectors: What It Means to Be a Citizen Scientist

Across our site, newsletters, and social media, you’re likely to have seen posts from us highlighting St. Marys Riverkeeper volunteers and team members: citizen scientists! But what does it actually mean to be a citizen scientist, particularly in relation to river health and safety? Let’s dive in!Read More on Our Blog

Save the Roadless Rule

Since 2001, the Roadless Area Conservation Rule has prohibited the construction of new roads and commercial logging in National Forest “inventoried roadless areas” which provide crucial fish and wildlife habitat, guard water quality, and support recreational opportunities for the public. In Florida and Georgia, rescinding the Roadless Rule would open critical public lands to roads and commercial logging, many of which directly impact the health of our river and surrounding communities. This includes the Osceola Forest, which is part of the St. Marys River watershed.

Protecting our forests, saltmarshes, and wetlands helps protect our communities from threats like flooding and storm surge, and helps keep our watershed swimmable, fishable, and drinkable, now and for future generations.
How you can help:

Contact your representatives and urge them to support and pass the Roadless Area Conservation Act.

You can find your local representatives and send them an email here.

Toast to Clean WaterIt’s always a great time to donate–right now, you can make even more of an impact during our Toast to Clean Water campaign. We’re working to raise $25,000 to advocate for the St. Marys River.

Our 2025 plan remains intentionally small and focused, reflecting our commitment to strategic, high-impact work that delivers real results to our watershed. This year, we are prioritizing two key initiatives:

1. Launching our new resilience initiative, made possible through federal NFWF grant funding, which will help communities along the St. Marys River adapt and be more resilient.
2. Strengthening our core programs that protect, monitor, and advocate for the health and future of the St. Marys River.

By joining our efforts, you’re making an investment in the long-term health of the river and the people who depend on it—today and for generations to come.

Our science-based water monitoring program is a critical resource when addressing local stakeholders and when advocating on behalf of clean water to state and local enforcement agencies. Clean water is vital to the health of all living things, vibrant communities, and strong economies.
