As I am preaching from Genesis, I couldn’t help but notice the sharp contrast between two back-to-back stories.
In chapter 20, the judgment of God falls on Sodom—a city of men that prided themselves on sleeping with anything and everything but their spouse.
Then in chapter 21, God blesses Abraham and Sarah with baby Isaac, and laughter fills their home.
One story ends in the smoldering flames of judgment; the other in the joy of new life.
Then and Now
The contrast is as vivid today as it was then.
This week, Netflix’s stock price took a hit, tumbling amid a wave of backlash tied to its animated children’s series Dead End: Paranormal Park, developed by Hamish Steele.
The show, aimed at young audiences, features a transgender teenage character named Barney and weaves in themes of gender identity. In one notable scene, hospital staff are asked to treat and refer to Barney as a girl — a moment that sparked intense debate.
This crosses a line, embedding adult-oriented themes into content marketed for children.
The controversy only deepened when Steele took to social media, labeling conservative commentator Charlie Kirk a “Nazi” and mocking the UK Prime Minister’s tribute to Kirk with profanity-laced posts. The intent behind the show, it seems, is anything but subtle.
A Tale of Two Spirits
As Hamish Steele mocks the joyful spirit of Charlie Kirk while celebrating the confused ethics of the LGBTQ movement, we’re reminded that the same spiritual divide still runs through our world — between those who scorn God’s design and those who rejoice in His promises.
Charlie Kirk projects a public persona of joy and conviction, rallying against moral decay.
Meanwhile, Steele’s work embraces the ethos of Sodom, pushing progressive ideals onto young viewers through animation.
As Isaiah warned:
“Woe to those who call evil good and good evil,
who put darkness for light and light for darkness.”
— Isaiah 5:20
We are living in an age where wrong is celebrated as right, and righteousness is mocked as outdated.
Dead End: Paranormal Park has become a lightning rod — raising questions about what’s appropriate for children and whether entertainment should double as a platform for social agendas.
Netflix’s recent stock drop may signal that a growing number of viewers are voting with their wallets, saying, “We’ve had enough.”
Two Paths Before Us
As we compare this moment to the story of Abraham and Sodom, we must remember:
one path led to the smoldering flames of judgment,
the other to a home filled with joy and laughter.
Two paths are before us —
one leads to blessing, the other to cursing;
one to life, the other to death.
