Amelia Island Museum of History Presents Dr. Johnathan Bryant

August 18, 2023 | 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Friday, August 18, at 6pm

In 1820, a suspicious vessel was spotted lingering off the coast of northern Florida— the Spanish slave ship Antelope. The ship and its almost 300 African captives were seized by the United States, sparking an explosion of legal action that eventually made it all the way to the Supreme Court. In this talk, Dr. Bryant will speak about the captives’ harrowing voyage across dangerous waters and the eight-year legal conflict that followed to determine their freedom.

Attendance is free for members and a suggested donation of $5 for nonmembers. Seating is limited on a first come, first served basis. This program is wheelchair accessible.
