Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, a Republican, has agreed to a debate invitation from California Governor Gavin Newsom, a Democrat. These two influential leaders from two of the largest states in the US are positioning their exchange as a significant discussion about the nation’s future.
DeSantis made this announcement during an appearance on Fox News earlier this week. Newsom had invited the Florida governor to engage in a debate moderated by Fox News host Sean Hannity.
“Absolutely. I’m ready. Let’s do it. Just tell me the when and where, and we’ll make it happen,” stated DeSantis enthusiastically.
The Republican leader from Florida also pointed out, “In one way, the debate about California versus Florida has already taken place; as you mentioned, people have been expressing their choice. They’ve been expressing it by moving. They have been leaving California in large numbers.”
“Florida has become the top destination for people coming in,” he proudly shared. “Our economy is ranked number one.”
Governor DeSantis also highlighted the positive achievements of his state, including a significant drop in crime rates over the past five years and outstanding educational rankings.
Looking ahead, DeSantis, a potential 2024 Republican candidate, suggested that President Joe Biden might not secure his party’s nomination in the next election. DeSantis specifically named Newsom and Vice President Kamala Harris as potential rivals.
“However, this is not only about an individual candidacy,” DeSantis emphasized. “This is about the direction our country is headed. People like Joe Biden favor turning the entire United States into something resembling California.”
DeSantis expressed concerns that if someone like Newsom or Kamala Harris were to become the nominee, “it would hasten the decline of America. We cannot let America decline further. We must work to reverse this trend.”
