I got my start as a reporter covering the Charter 77 movement in Prague, Czechoslovakia. This was an earlier iteration of the anti-Communist movement led by playwright Vaclav Havel that ultimately led to the fall of the Berlin Wall and the end of European Communism in 1989. I tell that story and many more in my latest book, And the Rest is History: Tales of Hostages, Arms Dealers, Dirty Tricks, and Spies. I had the pleasure of talking about the book – as well as US mistakes in Ukraine and Iran and my time as a hostage in Beirut – with former FoxNews commentator Lisa Daftari, now the editor of The Foreign Desk, a must-read daily summary of top stories on the foreign policy front. Lisa reminded our viewers how we met more than 15 years ago in Los Angeles when she was still a journalist student. “I’ve been blessed to have had you as a mentor and now actually to call you a colleague,” she said. My advice to young journalists? Follow the facts, not a “narrative.” Sounds simple, doesn’t it? Alas, it’s not. Just turn on your TV or open your newspaper. Here’s the link to this fun interview: https://foreigndesknews.com/podcast/and-the-rest-is-history-ken-timmerman/ In my weekly commentary on Prophecy Today Weekend, which airs at 1:05 PM on Saturday, I talk about Putin’s goals in Ukraine, the latest of Putin’s victims who just “fell” out of a 16th story window to her death, Chinese oil imports from Russia and Iran, and the prospects of a Chinese takeover of Taiwan. Most commentators like to play arm-chair general (think: Jesse Waters, whose FoxNews show I can no longer watch because he has become so ridiculous). I prefer to look at facts. China is obviously watching Russia’s performance in Ukraine to gauge the pitfalls its own potential invasion of Taiwan. But the Chinese are also watching us, and what they see is a military industrial base in a shambles, unable to produce the weapons needed to fight just a single proxy war, let alone two and a half small regional conflicts, the Reagan-era requirement. But I believe the Chinese have other options than a military takeover, and that they would probably prefer to assimilate Taiwan intact, not as a bombed-out wreck. If they don’t invade they can always blockade, and choke off U.S. resupplies to Taiwan. You can tune in live to hear my comments at 1:05 PM on Saturday in the Jacksonville area on 104.9 FM or by using the Jacksonville Way Radio app, which you download at the Apple app store. Otherwise, you can listen to the podcast of Saturday’s show or previous shows at the Prophecy Today podcast page. Yours in freedom, Ken |
