Opinion

By Zach Terry, 11-20-24

Last year, I praised the courage of then-Mayor Bradly Bean for refusing to endorse the “Transgender Day of Remembrance” proclamation, a statement that over 185 cities and more than 20 other countries have observed in recent years.

Why do I think this is bad for our city? Simply because TRANSGENDERISM is not real. A person can no more change their gender than a zebra can change its stripes. Transgenderism is a silly concept that has spread like wildfire among the most gullible of our citizens who wish to champion any talking point the left produces without pausing to ask… is this a thing?

Mayor Bean stood up to this nonsense. The newly elected Mayor Antun did not. Instead, at the November 19 Commission meeting, he passed the rainbow torch to newly elected commissioner Joyce Tuten, who proceeded to read the proclamation at the November 19th city commission meeting.

Perhaps this is a good time to mention that while the national elections get the lion’s share of the press – it is the local government that really shapes our world. Large media conglomerates may put you in social media jail for speaking the truth, but it is the local sheriff who can put you in actual jail.

You have heard the saying, “All politics is local”? Well, so is all crazy.

Fernandina Beach is, for a couple of years, the Austin of Nassau County. A blimp of blue in a sea of red. For my conservative friends in Fernandina – let me encourage you to email Mayor Antun, who ran a few years back as a supposed conservative. Let him know that if he can find the courage to stand for what he knows is true – we will stand with him. If he cannot, we will assume he has drank the rainbow koolaid.

Let me say a word of thanks for Vice Mayor Darron Ayscue for taking a stand for truth in spite of the opposition. This is the kind of leadership we need in Fernandina Beach.
