New District Review Committee meets to decide on a book.
One obscene School Library Book removedĀ Once again, we have an update on the obscene books in Nassau County school libraries.Ā This is good news.Ā The quick answer is thatĀ A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah MaasĀ was permanently removed from Nassau County School libraries yesterday by the new District Review Committee.Ā Ā Ā Here is how it happened.Ā Thanks to Jinger Brinkley who objected with specific and compelling reasons, the case to remove the book was very strong.Ā Brinkley made it clear that this book must be removed as this book is part of a series of sexually explicit books that get worse with every release.Ā Ā The District Review Committee was put on notice that if books like this one end up in the hands of a student who shares with other students, the sharing student, the school district, the school superintendent and members of this review committee could be criminally liable for putting this obscene book back on the library shelves as distribution of pornography to minors.Ā Ā The book itself is so obviously in violation, the review committee voted 6-1 to remove the book.Ā The violation was obvious to all committee members except one.Ā It just so happens committee member Ms. Donna Perry was the lone voice seeking to keep the book in the library.Ā Ms. Perry is the librarian at Yulee High School.Ā Ā She claimed there was literary value because āliterary reviewersā online give high marks.Ā People should know that these book reviews are paid for by left wing activists who are promoting obscenity, sex and aberrant behavior. These reviewers seek to glorify the books and ignore the aberrant message and behavior that has no place for minors in a public school. If this sounds like a broken record, it is.Ā In 2023, this same book was identified by Nassau CDF as an obscene book that should be removed and reported to the school district. The school district went through the review process.Ā OnĀ November 9, 2023, the Informal Book Review committeeĀ classified this book as violating Florida statutes for obscenity and had it removed.Ā But, on August 12, 2024, the Nassau County School Board, on recommendation of the Superintendent and Board Attorney, voted to RETURN the book to the libraries due to fear of a Federal lawsuit.Ā To get the book removed this time, Superintendent Kathy Burns rounded up 9 volunteers to be on the District Review Committee.Ā These volunteers had to read a plethora of rules, regulations, read or listen to the book, answer questions about the book and attend the meeting to recommend action.Ā The committee was light on discussions and nearly unanimous in their assessment.Ā Itās bad.Ā Many thanks to these dedicated committee members!Ā Ā One obvious question is why has Superintendent Burns, School Principals, Media Specialists or the School Board not taken action through their authority to remove the books.Ā They claim that they do not have the authority to remove obscene books.Ā So, the only solution is to find 9 volunteers to make the decision for them.Ā This is our government at work.Ā Wasting time, resources, volunteer time, and legal resources to distract from the fact that we need more attention paid to teaching children and less time cleaning up obscenity in the libraries. Did you make a New Year’s resolutionĀ to get involved. The time to just read the news and complain is over.
