Title: Firefighter/EMT

Reports to: Fire/Rescue Captain
Pay Grade: 1 $15.45 hourly
Minimum Qualifications
A. Education and Experience:
High school diploma or GED required.
B. Certifications: Florida Firefighter certification as authorized by F.S.S. 633, Florida EMT
certification.
C. Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:
Knowledge of street locations, geography, and types of construction in the city preferred. Excellent communication skills required. Ability to act effectively in stressful situations required. Ability to perform strenuous physical activities during emergency, training, or station maintenance activities for prolonged periods of time under conditions of extreme heights, intense heat, cold, or smoke required. Ability to learn firefighting techniques, policies, procedures, and practices required
General Description
Protect life and property by performing firefighting, emergency aid, and fire prevention duties, at times under high levels of emotional and physical stress. Maintain fire equipment, apparatus and facilities. Perform general fire inspection and community outreach and education. Frequent contact with public requiring courtesy, discretion, and sound judgment. Work performed inside and outside in various weather conditions in and around potentially hazardous areas and conditions.
Essential Functions
1. Lays, connects, and places hose line in Fire operations. Raises and climbs ladders. Enters buildings and other fire involved areas. Uses extinguishers, bars, hooks, lines and axes and other hand equipment. Ventilates burning buildings and structures. Throws salvage covers and removes debris. Operates pumps.
2. Makes regular inspections of apparatus and equipment and notifies supervisor of defects. Conducts routine maintenance and apparatus check-out as required.
3. Drives and operates all rescue equipment as directed
4. Makes visual and physical inspections of buildings to locate fire hazards.
5. Rescues and removes individuals from danger. Administers life support functions to sick, injured, or afflicted persons.
6. Makes periodic inspections of buildings to locate fire hazards.
7. Performs physical cleaning and maintenance tasks on department buildings and equipment using brooms, mops, vacuum cleaners, etc. Performs hydrant maintenance.
8. Attends training and drill sessions in such subjects as firefighting and inspection methods, equipment operations and emergency medical treatment.
9. Attends and participates in administrative meetings and training sessions as required.
10. Assists in training new employees as assigned.
11. Performs other duties as assigned
Essential Physical Skills
Acceptable eyesight and hearing (with or without corrections); ability to communicate both orally and in writing; meet physical requirements as indicated for State Certification. Must endure sustained acts of physical exhaustion and endure periods of duty under unfavorable and life-threatening situations. Driving heavy vehicles and equipment; heavy (45 pounds and over) lifting and carrying. Reaching, pulling, pushing, balancing, throwing, climbing (including ladders), walking, standing, crawling, kneeling, bending, stooping, jumping, running, and smelling. Environmental Conditions
Works inside and outside in various weather conditions. Hazardous conditions: flames, fire, chemicals, smoke, heat, gases, moving vehicles, falling structures and debris, electricity, poor ventilation, poor lighting, and related hazardous conditions. Stressful situations; heights.
