Press Release
By Nassau County Board of County Commissioners
4/10/25

Nassau County, Florida, April 10, 2025 – In October 2023, the Board of County
Commissioners (BOCC) launched Nassau Florida Vision 2050, an 18-month
collaborative effort to gain public feedback on the future of Nassau County and to
develop a plan based on the community’s desires to guide future growth and
development over the next 25 years. The resulting Vision Plan will create a
sustainable, prosperous, and resilient future for Nassau County by integrating
community input and strategic planning to ensure long-term viability for the
community. The information will also be used to update the County’s State-mandated
Comprehensive Plan and shape public policy.
Gathering community feedback during this 18-month period was achieved through a
variety of avenues including stakeholder interviews; community surveys; a
statistically valid survey; county-wide pop-up events; and interactive engagement
exercises in the County’s Vision 2050 tent which were available at several large
special events such as the Bicentennial Kick-off Celebration, Opening of the Beaches
in Fernandina Beach, the Annual Tree Lighting in Yulee, Annual Railroad Days Event
in Callahan, and the Independence Day Celebration in Callahan.
The efforts began with a series of community surveys aimed at bringing big ideas into
actionable strategies. This included identifying and celebrating the County’s unique
history and culture. Hundreds participated in the initial surveys, providing valuable
feedback used to create the Community Building Blocks. Each building block
represents an over-arching theme identified during the initial survey process. A Community Building Blocks survey was made available to the public and over 9,000
people provided comments.
The next step in the Vision 2050 process included taking information collected from
the Community Building Blocks survey to create three growth scenarios, all of which
were presented at a Board of County Commissioners meeting on October 16, 2024,
and at a community meeting held the same day. Feedback gained from the three
growth scenarios was used to create a final preferred growth scenario that illustrates
the overarching character of growth across the County and identifies priority areas for
development. During the meeting, County Manager Taco Pope stated, “Vision 2050
is the foundational element of your 2050 Comprehensive Plan. The adoption of the
Vision 2050 Comprehensive Plan is the single most important piece of legislation that
you will consider as an elected official. It is the document from which all of the public
policies you set will stem from. When you set new rules and new regulations, they will
be required to be consistent with your Comprehensive Plan. So, both us as staff
members and you as Elected Officials, have an amazing opportunity to shape not just
tomorrow, but the next 25 years to the place we call home.
The BOCC is excited to announce that all of these efforts have led to the final draft
Vision Plan which will set the foundation for growth and development over the next
25 years. The draft Vision Plan will be available for public comment from April 9
to May 23, 2025. During this time, the draft Vision Plan will be presented through
various avenues including the Planning Advisory Committee, Towns of Hilliard and
Callahan, City of Fernandina Beach, and the Nassau Prosperity Alliance. An open
house will be held on April 29, 2025, and it is anticipated that the final plan will be
presented to the BOCC at a public workshop on June 9, 2025, and formally adopted
at a public hearing on June 23, 2025.
Nassau County invites residents to explore the draft Vision 2050 Plan through an
interactive StoryMap, where you can review the Growth Plan, proposed actions and
strategies – and share your comments online. Visit www.nassaufl2050.com today.
