Governor DeSantis Declares State of Emergency
On Thursday, August 1, 2024, Governor Ron DeSantis issued Executive Order No. 24-156 declaring a State of Emergency for numerous Florida counties, including Nassau, ahead of the Tropical Storm in the Atlantic. According to the Executive Order, there is a significant threat of heavy rainfall of most of the State, with the possibility of at least 12 inches of rain over the next 7 days.
Declaring a State of Emergency allows your government officials quick access to resources to help manage a crisis until things return to normal. A State of Emergency also helps government officials take extra measures to protect the public, trigger anti-price gouging laws, and most importantly, seek Federal funding for disaster response and reimbursement of funds exhausted on things such as overtime costs and purchase of supplies and equipment needed to manage the emergency.
Nassau County Emergency Management is your local source for the storm. Information can be found on their webpage at www.OneNassau.com and on their FaceBook page. If you have not already, please sign up for emergency alerts to ensure you get important notices. Lastly, they can be reached by phone at (904) 548-0900.
Apprenticeship Program Earns NACo Achievement Award
The Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) is pleased to announce that Nassau County has been selected for NACo’s Personnel Management, Employment and Training Award for its Nassau County Equipment Operator Apprenticeship Program. Since 1970, the National Association of Counties (NACo) has recognized outstanding government programs and services. Each year, NACo seeks nominations on a variety of categories that cover a vast range of county responsibilities.
This Nassau County Operator Apprenticeship Program was created in 2021 in an effort to recruit and retain high caliber employees in a competitive job market. The program was designed to provide Road Department employees with a clear, defined career path upon beginning their employment, and to provide an avenue to increase their skillset through training. A three-year Equipment Operator Apprenticeship Program was developed to train the employees on the safe and efficient operation of small equipment, heavy trucks and heavy equipment. Their first step in the program is obtaining a Class “A” Commercial Driver’s License, followed by learning all aspects of the Road Department to become a highly valued Equipment Operator.

Turtle Talk Tuesday
This week for Turtle Talk Tuesday, we focused on how we can protect sea turtles in the open ocean. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), vessel strikes are one of the most common causes of sea turtle injury and death in the United States. In Florida alone, injuries consistent with vessel strikes are observed in 20-30 percent of stranded sea turtles.
Opioid Task for to Hold First Meeting
The new Opioid Task Force will hold its first meeting on Thursday, August 8, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. in the Commission Chambers located at 96135 Nassau Place, Yulee. The Opioid Task Force was formed by Resolution No. 2024-040 to recommend to the Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) the most efficient use of settlement funds from the State of Florida’s litigation against Pharmaceutical Supply Chain Participants accountable for the damage caused to the State by their misfeasance, nonfeasance and malfeasance (opioid lawsuits).
Bicentennial & Nassau Vision 2050 Activities
Throughout the year, Conner’s A-Maize-ing Acres, located in Hilliard, provides family-friendly and agritourism opportunities to the community by allowing the public to visit the farm for photo ops and good, wholesome fun. They host field trips and parties and provide the annual sunflower patch and the pumpkin patch and corn maze. Each year, Conner’s A-Maize-ing Acres creates a new design of the corn maze which is unveiled before opening day. We are excited to announce that as part of our year-long Bicentennial, Nassau County has partnered with Conners A-Maize-ing Acres for a special Bicentennial-themed corn maze design.
Stay tuned in the coming weeks as we highlight this tedious process and provide sneak peaks of the mystery design. An announcement will be made this summer about a joint unveiling event between Conner’s A-Maize-Ing Acres and the Board of County Commissioners. You won’t want to miss this once-in-a-lifetime (more like 200 years!) design unveiling or the loads of fun waiting for you at Conner’s A-Maize-Ing Acres.
Community Building Blocks Survey
The County launched Nassau Florida Vision 2050, a collaborative 18-month process involving local leaders, residents, businesses, and stakeholders to shape the future of our community.
The project kicked off with extensive community engagement and a review of the County’s plans, studies, and existing conditions. Based on this input, draft “Community Building Blocks” have been developed, outlining core values that will guide recommendations and strategies for the Vision plan. Residents, business owners, and other community members are encouraged to share their thoughts on the Building Blocks through a new survey. The survey asks respondents to:
● Identify which values resonate with them.
● Describe their ideas for what these values could look like in practice.
Once participants take the quick 5-question survey, they will be entered in a raffle to win a local prize or experience in the County.
