Nassau County, Fernandina Beach, and Amelia Island Celebrate Opening of the Beaches and the County & City’s 200th Birthday this Saturday, May 18 from 10 am to 4 pm at Main Beach Park (32 N Fletcher Ave) in Fernandina Beach. The free, family-friendly event features activities for all ages including a Kids Zone, Touch-a-Truck, Skateboard Competition, Food Trucks, and a Beer Garden with live music with local favorites: The Honey Badgers along with special guests Laid Back and The Liberty Blues Band.

Brief History From West Nassau Historical Society

Earlier in the day is the 8K Beach Run at Peters Point, 4600 Peters Point Road) from 8-11 am, presented by the Amelia Island Convention &  Visitors Bureau. The cost to participate is $35. Register online at https://nassaufl.com/Isleof8KBeachRun24.

Also, happening on Saturday, May 18 is the 15th Annual Wild Amelia Nature Festival, presented by Keep Nassau Beautiful. The Nature Festival includes exhibits and live animals a the Wild Amelia Eco-Expo.

National Police Week and Peace Officers Memorial Day

Former President John F. Kennedy in 1962 designated May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the entire week as National Police Week.

National Maritime Day

National Maritime Day was established by the U.S. Congress to commemorate the American steamship Savannah’s maiden voyage from the United States to England, marking the first successful crossing of the Atlantic Ocean with steam propulsion. Nassau County has designated May 22 as National Maritime Day to recognize the Port of Fernandina Beach and its employees for serving as the gateway for domestic and international trade.

Childcare Center Proposed on West Side of Amelia Concourse

Nassau County Planning Department staff is reviewing a site plan for the Amazing Explorers Academy, a child care center of 18,100 square feet with outdoor play areas, proposed within a 5.81-acre property on the Amelia Concourse.

Capital Projects

  • Amelia Island Trail from Simmons Road to Hickory Street (Construction will commence in the the Spring of 2024).
  • Amelia Island Parkway Trail: Phase One (Construction b CGC, Inc. is underway). Expected completion is May, 2024).
  • Amelia Island Parkway Trail: Phases 2-4 (Expected to commence construction in the Summer of 2024).

Nassau County residents could vote for three top concerns. The March vote with 229 residents revealed the three top concerns: National Resource Protection, Managed Growth, and Infrastructure Maintenance.

Nassau Board of County Commissioners Changes Meeting Time

Beginning June 3rd, the meetings on the Second and Forth Monday will begin at 5 pm while the meeting on the Third Wednesday will continue at 9 am. All board meetings are held at the James S. Page Governmental Complex, 96135 Nassau Place, Yulee, Florida.
