Editor’s note: We have placed this in the News section because it is an important annual rating of legislators. You may or may not agree with their rating criteria, which profess to be a composite constitutional voting summary based on 10 key bills covering areas of principles of limited government, fiscal responsibility, national sovereignty, and a traditional foreign policy of avoiding foreign entanglements.

How faithful are your Congressmen to the U.S. Constitution?

The New American magazine has just released its first Freedom Index and Congressional Scorecards for the (current) 118th Congress. These scorecards rate members of Congress on how faithfully they are upholding their solemn oath “to support this Constitution.”

The Freedom Index rates congressmen based on their adherence to constitutional principles of limited government, fiscal responsibility, national sovereignty, and a traditional foreign policy of avoiding foreign entanglements.

The scores are derived by dividing a congressman’s constitutional votes (pluses) by the total number he cast (pluses and minuses) and multiplying by 100. We encourage readers to examine how their own congressmen voted on each of the 10 key measures. We also encourage readers to commend legislators for their constitutional votes, and to urge improvement where needed.

Also, don’t forget our state Legislative Scorecards, which rate state legislators from all 50 states on their adherence to the U.S. Constitution and limited-government principles.

We live at a time when our federal government routinely usurps powers not granted to it by the Constitution. This is leading to an increasingly out-of-control big government that routinely infringes on our basic rights (property rights, privacy rights, religious liberties, right to bear arms, etc.).

The solution is for more and more voters to hold their legislators (federal and state) accountable to the Constitution. Please print out the Freedom Index, Congressional Scorecards, and Legislative Scorecards, and distribute them to inform your fellow citizens of their legislators’ voting records and to pressure those legislators to follow the Constitution.

JBS founder Robert Welch once wrote, “Education is our total strategy, and truth is our only weapon.” The Freedom Index is a vital tool to educate the electorate on their congressmen’s voting records and on what the Constitution says about those issues.
