At the June 18 City Commission meeting, Mayor Bradley Bean presented a Proclamation from Fernandina Beach making June 29 Christian Heritage Day. Judge John Meisburg stepped up to accept it, with about 25 local Christians standing with him (and more in the audience), including Fernandina Baptist Church Senior Pastor Zach Terry, who made a brief acceptance speech. The ad hoc Christian Heritage group will present the first ever Christian Heritage Parade- it’s coming to Centre Street, Fernandina Beach at 10 am on Saturday, June 29. The parade will be followed by a Faith Festival in Central Park, with food, game, festivities, etc. See event announcement. We will be honoring American Independence, and our great Christian heritage! All are invited to view the parade and attend the festivities.
At last count, there were over 90 entities signed up to march, drive, or tow floats in the event. Organizers estimated that those will form about 50 different groups in line, comprising hundreds of people.
Dissenters
Not everyone was thrilled about the Proclamation or the parade. During the comments period later on, speakers denounced the parade participation requirements, which called for endorsing certain principles, which you can read via the event announcement link above. Here’s a rather one-sided article by former Mayor Mike Lednovich, which quotes the speakers. Some interesting reader comments, too.
You can watch speaker comments in the meeting video in agenda item 6.
