Fernandina Beach Parks and Recreation department is excited to announce our Summer Program Guide! We’ve collected info on summer camps, tours, swim lessons and more and put it in once place for your convenience. 

Program – Lighthouse Tours

Time – Every 1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month from 10am-11am

Program location – Atlantic Recreation Center

Program cost – $5 for kids and $10 for adults

Program description – The Amelia Island Lighthouse Guided tour consists of a 45 min lecture and 15-20 minutes of touring the grounds. Visitors can look inside the lighthouse but are not permitted to climb the stairs. Registration for the tour is required.

Program – Egans Creek Greenway Tours

Time – Every 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month from 10am-12pm or ask about alternate scheduling.

Program location – Atlantic Recreation Center

Program cost – $10 per person and $5 for children 12 and under.

Program description – This guided walking tour allows you to explore the flora and fauna of Egans Creek Greenway. Participants are encouraged to bring water, skin protectant, and insect repellent. Pre- registration is required. Please register no later than the previous Friday.

                                Playground Locations

Camp Amelia Playground -2500 Atlantic Avenue (behind the Atlantic Recreation Center. Camp Amelia is a fenced playground that includes rubber surfacing; shaded picnic area with 3 picnic tables; access to restrooms near Egans Creek Greenway entrance. Parking available. This playground is closed to the public during youth camp hours (Monday-Friday 7am-6pm). Strictly Enforced.

 Teddy Bear Playground – 1200 Atlantic Avenue. The newly renovated Teddy Bear playground is at our beautiful Central Park location which also includes, Pavilion; picnic tables; open green space; and restrooms.  Parking available.

Egans Creek Park – 2201 Atlantic Avenue. Egans Creek Park is 300 acres of unspoiled nature located right on the Egans Creek river and offering a network of trails suitable for walking and bicycling, and other amenities which include, Pavilion with picnic tables; kayak launch; Explorer Dome play apparatus; fishing dock shaded fitness areas along trail with outdoor fitness equipment; open green space; and restrooms.  Parking available.

MLK Jr. Park – 1200 Elm Street.  This family friendly park is located right next to our Charles Albert Playing Field which also includes 3 pavilions with picnic tables; and restrooms.  Parking available.

Pirate Park – 2500 Atlantic (behind the Atlantic Recreation Center). Pirate Park is a community-accessible playground that integrates exercise, art, nature, music, imagination, and local history for children of all physical and mental abilities.

Sunrise Park – 1900 Sunrise Drive. Located along Egans Creek, Sunrise Park is home to a big green open space with beautiful scenery and a playground. Parking is available.

Pickleball – Pickleball is played at the Central Park Pickleball Courts, behind Tennis Courts 3 & 4 at the corner of South 13th Street and Atlantic Avenue.  Six (6) lighted pickleball courts are available until 10:00pm daily.  The gates at the courts are unlocked.  Restrooms, a water fountain, and AED are nearby.

Pickleball Courts General Guidelines

  • Courts are for pickleball use only.
  • Chairs are not permitted on the courts.
  • Skateboards, rollerblades, bicycles, and similar devices are prohibited on the courts.
  • Pets are not permitted on the courts.
  • Alcohol is prohibited on the courts and in Central Park.
  • Please wear appropriate court footwear.
  • Lights are operable daily from 6:00am – Sunrise and from Sunset – 10:00pm.
  • To operate the lights, please press the white button on the east or west end of the courts outside the gates.  Lights will turn off after1 hour.  Press the white button again to illuminate the lights.
  • For questions and/or to report any issues, please call the Parks & Recreation office at 904-310-3350.

Scheduled Play – This is a more social type of play where individual players or groups of players should expect to play with other players of similar skill levels.  Players constantly rotate to other courts to play each other.  Loaner paddles and pickleballs are provided.

  • Drilling is not allowed.
  • Doubles format only.  When all courts are full and after a game finishes, players are to place their paddles in the paddle rack to wait for the next available court.
  • When less than 12 paddles are in the paddle rack, a 2 off/2 on rotation will be used.  4 players play a game on a court.  Winner is first team to score 11, win by 2.  The next 2 players with paddles in the paddle rack rotate onto the court.  Winners may stay on the court for 2 games maximum, then rotate off.
  • When 12 or more paddles are in the paddle rack, a 4 off/4 on rotation will be used.  4 players play a game on a court.  Winner is first team to score 11, win by 2.  All 4 players depart the court, and the next 4 players with paddles in the paddle rack rotate onto the court.

Scheduled Play days/hours are as follows and are posted on Gates A, B, C, and D at the courts:

  • Sunday, 2:00 – 5:00pm:  All playing levels on Courts 1 – 4; Beginners Play (playing levels 1.0 – 2.5) on Courts 5 & 6
  • Monday, 8:00 – 10:00am:  Women’s Play (all levels) on Courts 1 – 4; Beginner’s Play (levels 1.0 – 2.5; women and men) on Courts 5 & 6
  • Monday, 4:00 – 7:00pm:  Advanced Competitive Play (levels 4.0+) on Courts 1 – 6 with Challenge Court on Court 4
  • Tuesday, 8:00 – 11:00am:  Intermediate Play (levels 3.0 & 3.5) on Courts 1 – 6
  • Wednesday, 4:00 – 6:00pm:  Intermediate Play (levels 3.0 & 3.5) on Courts 1 – 6
  • Thursday, 8:00 – 10:00am:  Men’s Play (all playing levels) on Courts 1 – 4; all levels (men and women) on Courts 5 & 6
  • Friday, 8:00 – 11:00am:  Intermediate Play (levels 3.0 & 3.5) on Courts 1 – 6

Any days/hours outside of Scheduled Play are considered Open Play (singles or doubles).

Open Play – This type of play is catered to players who bring their own partners and play only in their particular groups.  Players should not expect to play with random players.  Players must bring their own paddles and pickleballs.

  • Singles or doubles allowed.
  • Drilling is only allowed when all courts are not full.
  • When 4 or more paddles are in the paddle rack, the 4 off/4 on rotation will be used.  Please limit court time to one game to 11, win by 2.
  • When the 4 off/4 on rotation is in effect, if the next 2 players with paddles in the paddle rack are playing singles, they must announce that they’re playing singles, then rotate onto the next available court.  The singles players must limit their court time to one game to 11, win by 2.

Tennis Courts –The City of Fernandina Beach provides four (4) hard surface lighted tennis courts (2 fenced areas, adjacent to each other, with 2 courts in each area) for the public at Central Park, on the corner of South 13th Street and Atlantic Avenue.  Gates are unlocked. The tennis courts are first come, first serve, excluding during instruction hours of Rod Gibson Tennis Services on Courts #1 and #2.

  • To operate the lights, please press the white button on the east side of the courts, outside the gate.  Lights will dim after 1 hour.  Press the white button again to fully illuminate the lights.

Petanque – Amelia Island Boules Club holds petanque pick-up games Saturdays from 9:30am – Noon and Wednesdays starting at 3:30pm on the Fernandina Beach petanque courts at the south end of the downtown marina (by the boat trailer parking lot). During the summer, pick-up games are played from 9:30am – Noon at the Central Park courts (west end of the park, near the Veterans Memorial).  The public is always welcome to join in!

Ping Pong – Ping Pong is held Tuesdays from 9:00am – Noon and Thursdays from 4:30 – 7:00pm at the Atlantic Recreation Center Auditorium.  All skill levels welcomed.  Loaner paddles and ping pong balls provided.  For more information, contact Richard Stratton ([email protected]; 904-321-2239).

Outdoor Basketball Locations

Main Beach Multi-Purpose Courtlocatedon Tarpon Avenue, has 4 basketball goals, and the court’s surface is marked for inline hockey, with 2 portable hockey goals at each end of the court.  Restrooms and parking available.

MLK, Jr. Basketball CourtLocated behind the MLK, Jr. Recreation Center and to the west of Charles Albert Field, this is a lighted outdoor basketball court.  The court is lit nightly until 9:30pm.
