Collin County, TX – If you’ve been following us on social media, then you are aware of the situation Collin County Citizens Defending Freedom (CCDF-Collin) has been monitoring in their community. Parents in a north Texas Independent School District (ISD) have been exerting pressure on their district board members to have books with explicit content removed from circulation in their school libraries.
Shannon Ayres, CCDF-Collin board member, and no stranger to speaking in front of school board meetings, addressed the Frisco ISD yet again regarding explicit material that was found on school library shelves. The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky is a coming-of-age novel that deals with subjects including mental health issues, sexuality, drug use, and rape.
“Philippians 4:8 says to set our minds on what is true, noble, right and pure.” Ms. Ayres remarked. “Why? Because garbage in: garbage out. What we fill our minds with matters.” She asked the board members to consider these words as she read from the book. While reading the excerpt, an excerpt that graphically described children engaging in oral sex, a Frisco school board member asked Ms. Ayres to stop reading noting that there was a child present in the board room at the time. The irony of this request was not lost on those in attendance as the room erupted in a chorus of voices expressing their disbelief at the hypocrisy being displayed.
Videos of Ms. Ayres’ comments have been making the rounds online, with thousands of views and shares occurring across multiple platforms. The response is overwhelmingly similar: Parents are outraged and demand accountability for the lack of oversight when it comes to protecting the well-being of their children. CCDF-Collin will continue in their steadfast fight to protect children and parental-rights, and they are working diligently with the community to ensure that The Perks of Being a Wallflower will be removed from school shelves.
